Education

Eighty-seven per cent of the schools in India are in the country’s villages. THAMANNA EDUCATION SOCIETY a government aided school in Hallegere Village of Mandya District has been striving for 25 years to provide education to the children of agricultural farm labourers with an average family per annum income of 50K INR.

There have been gaps due to lack of resources and the 2 waves of COVID has aggravated the situation by school closure as a non-medical intervention to deal with the pandemic.

We are now staring at this alarming situation continuing for more than a year.

For rural students, teachers are often the only source of motivation and guidance, our sample surveys have revealed this Prolonged school closure has seriously affected lifetime educational achievements of the children.

The students who are first generation learners, only a handful of them have intermittent access to smartphones, have no textbooks at home, they have received no educational assistance from family or have continually engaged in any educational activity.

The school has been adversely impacted due to the fees not being paid by the families as Lockdowns persist as the Breadwinners who are all daily wage labourers, continue to suffer loss in their earnings, which meant the school could not make any provision of live online classes for a year or could provide any educational materials.

Our Interventions

We have crafted a holistic vision for the school, to create a resilient education system that provides education & learning for all the 500 students.

We want to make up for the learning loss by getting all children to return/go to school or connected to other learning platforms.

We are committed to using digital technologies safely and creatively and will migrate to blended or back to school strategy whenever it is deemed safe by the government.

We have already started to Track and follow up with the children at risk of dropping out and in particular Encourage girls to re-/enroll.

We will address critical learning gaps, by training the teachers so they deliver quality sessions.

We will address health and nutrition needs of the students.

We will make it an inclusive school reopening with the most marginalised back in school.

We will handhold the students long term esp. those who have the potential to complete their tertiary professional education.
